BP Plc, named as The British Petroleum Company plc, is an international corporation that is specialized in the oil and gas industry. The company is among the biggest oil companies in the world. BP explores, produces, refines, distributes and markets oil and gas. Apart from oil and gas, the corporation invests also in renewable energy such as wind power, solar energy and biofuels. The company’s roots date back to the early 20th century when some English geologists found oil in the southwest part of Iran. William Knox D’Arcy was permitted by Iran to search for oil. This was important permission since there hadn’t been any oil explorations in the Middle East before. Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) was established in 1909. Until the late 30s, APOC searched for oil in the Middle East on behalf of Britain. The company was renamed as Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) in 1935 after a request of Reza Shah. It was renamed again in 1954 as British Petroleum Company after Iran nationalized Iranian petrol and removed AIOC. Today BP serves in about 80 countries around the world with over 18,000 stations and 73,000 employees.

In the UK we’re involved in the safe and reliable exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas. We transport, sell and trade energy products. We develop and manufacture petrochemicals for industrial and consumer goods. We market fuels and trade energy-related commodities and our Castrol arm produces lubricants. We also carry out research into efficient fuels and lubricants and produce low carbon biofuels.
To do all this, BP employs some 15,000 people in the UK. Talented men and women from varying backgrounds working in a host of environments including bustling trading floors, state-of-the-art laboratories and offshore platforms. But whatever their role and wherever they work, we enable all our people to thrive by providing an environment that fosters trust and co-operation, as we work together to tackle the energy challenges of today and tomorrow.
BP spends over 40% of our total research and development budget – some £175m a year – in the UK, channelled through our three major technology centres in Sunbury, Pangbourne and Hull.
Britain is home to some of the world’s leading academic institutions and we are proud to work with over 20 British universities on leading-edge research. In 2012 we committed more than £60m to research the new materials needed by the energy industry of the future, founding the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials with Manchester University, the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London.
