The Ideal Candidate
You will need a good knowledge of our editorial agenda, sharp production and writing skills and be able to respond to a fast-moving news environment with a high level of editorial judgement. Technical skills such as video editing and creating graphics would be an advantage. Candidates should enjoy working under pressure and bring plenty of story, contributor and production ideas to the role. You will be expected to work across our platforms and have an understanding of the different production methods as well as audience needs. You will be comfortable with technology and social media, able quickly to pick up new skills and turn ideas into engaging coverage. The successful candidates may be required to work across different teams on the channel and form good partnerships with our colleagues on online, digital and social news.
This role is one of a number of new positions created as part of BBC News NI’s efforts to enhance its digital news output. The Northern Ireland news index (bbc.co.uk/newsni) reaches an average of just over two million browsers every week. In addition, the service has a Twitter following of over two hundred thousand and a Facebook following of one hundred and twenty thousand. Stories produced on the website show strong engagement times and can often, where substantial news stories are concerned, gather well over two million page views.
- Originate and develop story ideas for the Northern Ireland news index and social accounts
- Upload text, video and images to the site and provide conversational and accurate copy
- Demonstrate video editing and self-shooting skills
- Be conversant in the use of social media as an interactive tool in finding and publishing stories and creating audience conversations

The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate should have a passion for, and track record in, digital news production. An ability to self-shoot and self-edit is highly desirable and a proven commitment to journalism is a requirement. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate an appetite for social journalism and identify ways to reach new audiences and increase online consumption of our news stories.
